  Jack Vettriano Biography

Jack Vettriano left school at the age of 16 in 1967 hoping to become a mining engineer working in the local coal field, near to where he lived in Scotland.

A set of watercolour paints given to him by a girlfriend on the occasion of his 21st birthday proved the inspiration for Vettriano's interest in painting. The local art gallery, The Kirkcaldy Museum and Art Gallery, furthered his interest in art and for a number of years he devoted much of this spare time to his new passion.

Vettriano was confident enough in 1989, with the painting standard he had achieved, to enter two pictures in the annual exhibition held by the Scottish Royal Academy. Both pictures were accepted and sold on the first day of the exhibition. The following year he was equally successful with the three paintings shown at the summer exhibition held in London at the Royal Academy.

Vettriano has enjoyed huge success with all his work since those early exhibitions. Sell out exhibition have been held throughout the world in Hong Kong, Johannesburg, Edinburgh and London.

In November 1999 at the exhibition in New York held at the Armory, twenty paintings sold out within one hour of the opening. Many were bought by UK collectors who had flown over especially to America.

Jack Vettriano's work is now reproduced in the form of Limited Edition Prints, Posters, Open Prints and Greeting Cards in an effort to satisfy the worldwide demand for his art.
